12 March: “With great sadness we are informing our readers that our Founder, friend, and mentor Dale Kennedy has passed away.
Dale took his passion for the hobby and turned it into a business that has impacted the lives of many and the community of Lancaster has a whole. The little hobby shop that started in 1977 as a small train store on the east end of downtown on Main St. brought joy and inspiration to countless hobbyists throughout the years. Dale nurtured that business though 3 moves and saw The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop grow into the pre-eminent hobby shop in Fairfield County.
After Dale sold it to us, he took the time to guide a couple of raw retail beginners through the maze of the retail world. He was patient with our questions, quick with a smile, and very proud of how the shop continued to grow. He often brought friends and relatives in to show off the Smoke Stack and how it continued to survive after he relinquished the reigns, He would check in on us often. We joked that he was just making sure that we hadn't run his shop into the ground. He and his wife Jean joined us every year at Christmas as we and the staff celebrated the holiday and toasted another year of the business.
Dale was a talented artist who designed the original Smoke Stack logo. He was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam.
We are so very thankful to have had the chance to know Dale and meet his wonderful family. He will be greatly missed.
